Sleepers.

October 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I was going to entitle this “Sleepers!”  However, I didn’t think it was proper to use an exclamation point after “sleeper”.  By their very nature sleeper cars are understated and very much anti-exclamation point.

Cars that fast without advertising to world that they are fast. Motor Trend’s WOT says this:

Cars like this have many names (sleepers, stealth cars, Q-ships) but they all serve the same purpose — to allow you to drive at a (responsibly) high speed without instantly getting in a Dukes of Hazzard-style showdown with the fuzz. Sure, they may not be the hottest looking vehicles on the planet, but what’s the use of having a sleek sports coupe when you’re tooling along in the slow lane, afraid of getting points on your license?

The guys at Motor Trends WOT blog have a great article entitled The Top 10 Cars for Driving Fast (Without Getting Caught).

Sleepers are some of the funnest cars on the road.  Car of the Day has chronicled some of the great sleepers in times past cars like:

Those are just a few of sneaky quick cars that are out there.  What’s your favorite sleeper?

    Subaru Spec B.
243hp stock. But with under 8K you can ring a easy 500+ in a AWD coupe.

The 1987 Toyota Camry is by far the biggest sleeper. Drop a v6 in there and a blower and knock the socks off that GTO any day. Just check out that pimp dash. So many buttons!

I don’t see how a blown Camry outruns the GTO. Toyota has made V6s with forced induction, none of them are faster than the GTO.

I raced a Supra Turbo at the track last week and beat his time by a full second.

But that is an awesome dash!
